Wichita Police Department
Citizen Alert Network
Get alerts about crime in the Lakepoint area!
The Wichita Police Department now offers free, secure, two-way communication with the public through the Wichita Police Citizen Alert Network. The alert system allows the WPD to send and receive text messages and email alerts directly to individual citizens. In addition, Watch Group Alerts allow law enforcement to send targeted alerts to specific neighborhoods – like Lakepoint -- with information about crimes that are happening in our immediate area.

Much like weather and news alerts people receive on their cell phones or computers, the Citizen Alert Network, using email and text messages, can quickly inform the entire community of missing persons, suspects or vehicles used in crimes. You’ll know if a neighbor’s property was burglarized or vandalized. If there is a crime in LakePoint, this service will alert you.

The Citizen Alert Network allows the WPD to imbed photographs, maps or Internet webpage links in the email alert messages that are sent out. This is especially helpful when alerting the public about a missing person, stolen property or a suspect vehicle.

The Citizen Alert Network allows two‐way communication between law enforcement and the public. While the WPD updates us, we can provide tips or observations of criminal activity that we see, directly to the WPD. The system allows citizens to text-message or email free, secure and anonymous tips about a crime directly to Crime Stoppers. All such tips are stripped of identifying information, ensuring their anonymity.

Your email, phone number and other personal information will remain secure and confidential when you sign up for Citizen Alert.

Beat 39 Crime Trends

Beat 39 is a relatively low crime area and most crimes involve burglaries, thefts from cars, identity theft and internet fraud. Here are some tip for those more common crimes:

Burglaries
Open garage door burglaries are the most common burglaries on Beat 39.
They involve an open garage door or an unlocked exterior door. Prevention tips include:
  • Keep lights on at night
  • Lock all doors and windows
  • Use alarms if you have them
  • Communicate with your neighbors
  • Call 911 if things seem out of place or if a crime is occurring
  • Always close garage doors, even if you are home for a brief moment
  • Never leave your garage door opener inside vehicles you park outside
  • Do not let strangers into your home. They may be scouting your valuables or watching for weaknesses in your home's defense
Top three items stolen in burglaries
  1. Flat Screen TVs
  2. Game Systems
  3. Laptops
Theft from vehicles
This is a crime of opportunity, and in most cases the victim is providing the opportunity. Thieves are watching! This type of crime takes literally seconds to commit. Not leaving valuables in your vehicle can make a huge impact in preventing this crime.

Test yourself. Do you have any of these top stolen items in your car right now?
  • Purse
  • GPS Unit
  • Wallet
  • iPod
  • Laptop
  • Cell Phone
  • Garage door openers! That's right.  Thieves don't even have to break in. They can just drive in and clean out your house.
Keeping those items out of your car reduces your chances of being a victim, It also helps to park in well-lit areas at night if possible, lock your doors, roll up all your windows, and be aware of surroundings.

Identity theft
Thieves can obtain your information many ways, don't make it easier for them. Here are some general rules to reduce your risk of having your identity stolen:

Mail Theft
  • Shred important documents you throw out
  • Always bring in your mail
  • Never use your mailbox for outgoing mail. Instead, hand deliver outgoing mail to mail courier or use a drop box.
  • Put your mail and newspapers on hold while on vacation
Internet fraud
  • Always use trusted websites
  • Never reply to emails from strangers
  • If you get a phone call or an email from your credit card company stating your account has been breached, do not give out information they should already have. Call back to a number you know.
  • Follow this simple rule, "If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is."
  • Set up a "Fraud Alert" through one of the credit reporting agencies:
Equifax  1-800-525-6285
Experian 1-888-397-3742
Transunion  1-800-680-7289
