According to the mailman, several mailboxes in the Cross Creek area were vandalized the night of July 4. The only boxes vandalized were those that had a lock box inside the mailbox and that were locked at that time. A metal lip was bent down on those locked inserts, giving the vandals or thieves the ability to reach down into the chamber that holds the deposited mail. The mailman said that many of the lockable inserts were not locked and those weren't damaged. Some mailboxes had no lock box inserts.

 

Bottom line: if your mailbox can be locked, lock it. If you don't have locking mailboxes in your neighborhood, talk to a board member in your neighbohood about getting them. Also, don't place important outgoing mail in your mailboxes.

 

Mailbox theft and identity theft go hand in hand and both are on the rise. Stay locked. Stay aware.
