LAKEPOINT LAKES ARE FILLING WITH SILT
Posted on Jun 3rd, 2014
Andy Smith (Gatewood) and his son, Liam, use a long tube called a "muck stick" to measure silt. Following a grid overlay on aerial photos of the lakes, they find predetermined locations to take measurements. They plunge the muck stick into the lake bottom until it hits the hard bottom. Silt is pushed up into the tube and is measured when the tube is pulled from the water. Andy also uses a range finder to bounce a laser from surrounding bench marks ( a tree, a stone, etc.) to make his location more exact. All of these measurements are then recorded.
The purpose of this project is to determine silt levels which will aid the board to designate when and where lake dredging needs to occur.
The muck stick isn't perfect so the board would welcome any advice from a resident who may have had dealings with dredging before. If you have ideas, please contact the board by clicking HERE.
