TREE PROJECT TO RESTORE PEAR TREE ROWS NEAR 13TH; MOVE MAPLES THROUGHOUT LAKEPOINT
Posted on Nov 14th, 2013
Those Bradfords were such a part of Lakepoint and possibly, the inspiration behind the Lakepoint logo, that the Master Board decided to restore the look of the Bradfords by planting Aristocrat Pears. The Aristocrat Pear has the same appearance as Bradfords but not the weakness of the Bradfords. The Aristorcrats were developed with a much wider branch angle from the trunk than the Bradford. A narrow angled branch is more likely to break than a wider angle.
But what about those gorgeous maples that were planted to replace the Bradfords a few years ago? These maples will be transplanted -- mostly in clusters -- throughout Lakepoint. Because of their size, a tree spade will be used for the transplanting process. These strong trees will add vibrant fall colors to the entire area. In their current locations, the maples were planted too far away from the street to provide the original canopy or tunnel effect at the 13th Street Entrance. This is another reason, along with the lack of spring blooms, that the board decided to move the maples.
About 37 maples will be moved to other Lakepoint locations and about 30 Aristocrats will be planted in the same line from the curb as the remaining Bradfords. The project will begin late this year or early next year, depending on the tree's dormancy. As the remaining Bradfords deterioate, they will be removed and replaced with an Aristocrat.
